Selecting an Aerial

There are various factors that must be considered when selecting the correct aerial for the application:

  • Gain: Gain effects the transmission distance and transmission pattern output by the uhf radio. The lower the gain, the more suitable the aerial is for hilly areas. Similarly, the higher the gain, the more suitable the aerial is for flat terrain. Typically, lower gain aerials are physically shorter than higher gain aerials. For average use, 2dB-3dB is considered ideal for hilly terrain, where 6dB-9dB is considered ideal for flat terrain.
  • Grounding: Some aerials need to be grounded, meaning they must be fitted to an item that is earthed (such as a bull bar). Some aerials are ground independent, and may be fitted to mirrors or plastic bull bars.
  • Length: Depending on where the aerial is being fitted, length may be an important consideration when purchasing a uhf aerial.
  • Construction: Aerials can be constructed from different materials. Typically, a fibreglass aerial whip is stronger and more suitable for constant corrugations than a light steel whip.
  • Base: An aerial fitted with a spring base is more suitable for constant corrugations than an aerial without a spring, as the spring absorbs the majority of the corrugations.

We have listed each of these factors in the "Specification" tab of this product, so you can compare different aerials.
